Slovakia supports Ukraine peace talks, welcomes Trump’s involvement
Pellegrini also cautioned that the European Union risks eroding trust in the Western Balkans due to continued delays in the enlargement process. “The European Union is gambling with the trust of Western Balkan citizens,” he said, describing the postponement of EU negotiation clusters for Serbia as “a political game by some member states.”
He stressed that Slovakia opposes adding extra political conditions to Serbia’s accession talks, arguing that progress should be measured on merit and that Belgrade has the right to EU membership if it fulfills established criteria. Pellegrini warned that prolonged delays could drive people in the region to abandon the European perspective, potentially undermining the EU’s long-term security and credibility.
On Ukraine, Pellegrini emphasized that the war should be resolved through dialogue, praising Trump’s involvement in diplomatic efforts. “I hope that 2026 can be a year of peace,” he said.
Vucic highlighted agreements to strengthen cooperation between Serbia and Slovakia, including military-technical collaboration and closer ties in the energy sector. He noted Serbia’s interest in learning from Slovakia’s expertise, particularly in nuclear energy, and emphasized the importance of expanding electricity capacity for the country’s future development.
The Western Balkans—comprising Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia—remain at different stages of EU accession. Montenegro and Serbia are formally negotiating membership, while North Macedonia and Albania began talks in 2022 but await concrete progress. Bosnia and Herzegovina has candidate status but has not yet started negotiations, and Kosovo remains outside the EU accession framework.
EU officials continue to affirm that the Western Balkans’ future lies within the bloc, but internal divisions and slow reforms have delayed integration. Pellegrini’s visit to Serbia also included discussions on bilateral relations, regional stability, and cooperation in advancing EU integration.
